Salon Instagram vs website: what Richmond salons and barbershops need

Local Search

Your Instagram is full of finished cuts. Your Google listing still sends people to the profile.

Hair salons and barbershops around Richmond, Henrico, and Sandston often run on repeat clients and a strong feed. That works until someone new searches the shop name, taps Website on Maps, and lands in a grid instead of hours, services, and a number they can call from the parking lot.

Salon Instagram vs website is not either/or: keep Instagram for regulars, and give Google, Maps, and new clients a website on your own domain.

Instagram is not a website

Meta gives you a free profile and a place to show work. That is real value. It is not a site you own, with your own booking or call path, service list, and pages written for how people search.

You also do not control the platform. Layout, reach, and account rules change without notice. If the profile gets locked or hacked, your only online home can go dark until support answers. Your domain and your site stay yours either way.

Link in bio tools and a pinned post are not a replacement. They are a maze for someone who only wanted Tuesday hours or whether you take walk-ins. We say the same on our websites for salons and barbershops page: Instagram is fine for regulars. New people still Google the shop and need a real landing place. The parallel for other trades is in Facebook page vs website. The feed is not the contract you hand Google when someone searches "barbershop Henrico" or "hair salon Sandston."

A Google Business Profile, Facebook Page, and Instagram together still miss the hub. A site ties name, phone, hours, and services so they match everywhere. We covered the Maps side in Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile? and listing basics in Do you need a Google Business Profile?

What Instagram is actually good for

Use the profile where it shines.

  • Before and after shots, color work, fades, and the vibe of the chair
  • Quick updates: running late, a stylist out, holiday hours, a sold-out product drop
  • Reels and stories that regulars actually watch
  • Social proof for people who already chose to follow you

None of that requires skipping a website. It requires putting your domain in the bio, in the Google listing website field, and anywhere else a stranger might tap "website" expecting a front door, not another feed.

Where Instagram-only drops the job

These are the leaks we see when we review salon and barbershop listings in eastern Henrico and the wider Richmond area.

Maps website button. If it opens Instagram, logged-out visitors, people in a hurry, and anyone who does not use the app bounce. Google cannot send walk-ins to a locked profile. A one-page site with hours, services, and click-to-call fixes that without turning the shop into a web project.

Hours search can trust. A story that says "closing early" does not replace stable hours on a page crawlers read every week. Seasonal changes belong on the site and the listing, updated the same day. Match what we describe in local search basics in Virginia: consistent name, phone, and towns you serve.

Services in plain words. Cuts, color, kids, beard, balayage, named the way you say them at the desk. A timeline is the wrong shape for "do you do X?" questions. You do not need a forty-page menu. You do need more than highlights from last month.

Phone and booking path. Tap-to-call on your domain beats making someone DM for a simple question. If you use a booking app, link it from a page you control, not only from a link stack in the bio.

Search beyond the handle. A reel might reach followers. It will not reliably answer "hair salon near me" or "barber open Saturday Richmond" the way indexed pages on your domain can when the technical base is solid.

What a real salon site has to finish

You do not need a magazine site to beat profile-only. You need a small site that finishes what search and Maps started.

  • One home screen on mobile: who you are, whether you are open, tap to call or book
  • Walk-in vs appointment, late nights, and which days you close on the first screen
  • Services listed plainly, not buried in a feed
  • Your photos, compressed so the page opens on a phone in the parking lot (see photos for your website)
  • Hours and phone that match your Google listing
  • Pages that work well on a phone

That is the core of website design in Richmond, VA for local shops: built for the tap after Maps, not for a design award.

Every PFQWEB site ships with solid technical SEO from day one. Titles, location signals, and a sitemap are part of the build, not an upsell. Hosting covers SSL, backups, and the basics we list on Features. If you want ongoing listing and content work after launch, that is Premium SEO, usually with a 6-month commitment. We will tell you whether you need it. Many shops get most of the win from a clean site plus a listing that points at it.

Most projects go from approval to launch in about one to two weeks, depending on how quickly content and feedback come back.

Salon and barbershop sites are quoted before we start. For a portfolio or static site, our Basic package is $259 for design and launch plus $20/mo hosting ($499 for the first year, then $240/yr for hosting after). See FAQ for timing and scope questions.

When Instagram-only is enough (rare) vs when you need both

Profile-only can carry you for a while if every client books through DMs, you do not care what the Maps website button does, and your hours almost never change. That is a narrow band.

You need a real site, and you should keep Instagram, when:

  • Strangers find you on Google or Maps and tap Website
  • You want to show up for service plus town searches, not only in someone's feed
  • You run more than one service line and clients keep asking which you offer
  • You need policies, intake, or gift cards in one stable place
  • Competitors in Henrico or Sandston already have a site and you do not

The usual healthy setup is both: a site as the hub, Instagram for day-to-day work and personality, and the Google listing wired to the site URL.
