What web hosting means for a small business
Your website files have to sit on computers that stay online. That service is hosting. When people type your address into a browser, those machines send back your pages, images, and scripts. Domain registration (the name) and hosting (where the site lives) are related but not the same purchase.
Hosting in everyday terms
Think of the domain as the street address and hosting as the building. You can move buildings and keep the address with some DNS paperwork. You can own an address with an empty lot (domain with no site). Customers only care that the door opens quickly and leads to the right business.
What you should actually care about
Uptime. Is the site up when customers try it, including evenings and weekends?
Speed. Slow hosting makes even well-built pages feel broken. See Why a slow website costs you customers.
Security basics. HTTPS certificates, sane access control, and a stack that gets maintenance. SSL overview: SSL in plain English.
Backups. When something is deleted or compromised, can you restore?
Support path. When the site is down Saturday morning, who do you call, and will they answer?
Email interplay. Moving hosting without care can break email DNS. Plan domains, web, and mail as one set.
Types you will hear about
- Shared hosting: cheap, many sites on one box. Fine for low-stakes pages. Can get noisy neighbors.
- VPS / cloud instances: more isolation. More for you (or your partner) to manage unless someone handles it.
- Managed platform / static cloud hosting: modern fit for many business marketing sites. Fast delivery. Certificates. Less server babysitting when set up well.
- Builder-included hosting: convenient until you need out or performance collapses under widgets.
The label matters less than outcomes. Fast. Secure. Backed up. Maintainable.
Who should manage it?
If you love servers and DNS, self-managing can work. Most owners of trades, restaurants, and small firms do not want that job. Paying for hosting that includes competent care is often cheaper than DIY outages.
How we handle it
Sites we build run on AWS-backed hosting with SSL, backups, and monitoring included. You do not have to log into a control panel to keep the lights on. If something breaks, you call us. More detail is on our features page.
If you bring a domain from elsewhere, we coordinate DNS so the cutover is planned. Not a hopeful midnight edit with no backup plan.
Red flags when shopping hosting alone
- Prices that seem impossible without upsells for “basic SSL” or backups
- Support that is only a ticket queue with multi-day replies
- Unlimited everything claims with fine print throttling
- No clear backup or restore story
- You cannot export your site when you want to leave
Bottom line
Hosting is where your site lives. Choose for reliability and responsibility, not only the monthly sticker. For local businesses, boring uptime beats exotic server toys.
