Do you actually need a blog?
Not the magazine kind. You do not need weekly posts, a following, or a voice document.
You need a few extra URLs. Each one aimed at a search your homepage and service pages cannot cover. Then a clear path back to the page that gets the call.
If you run a shop or trade in Richmond, Henrico, Sandston, or New Kent, that is the whole answer.
A homepage can't answer every search
Your homepage has one job. Who you are. What you do. How to reach you on a phone. A service page covers the work that makes money.
That is enough for a lot of searches. It is not enough for all of them.
People type the town plus the trade. They type the question they already ask you on the phone. Do you come out past the county line. Do you take this kind of job. Why does my business need a blog when I already have a site.
Google will not invent a page for those. If the answer only lives in your head, the result that shows is someone else's page. Or a directory. Or nobody.
Launch SEO gets a site in the index. Titles, location, a sitemap, pages search can actually read. That comes with every site we build. Indexing is the floor. A post gives Google something specific to show when the query is more specific than your name.
What a useful post actually is
It is not a diary. It is not "happy Monday from the shop." It is not five hundred words so the calendar stays full.
A useful post does three things:
- Answers one real search in plain language
- Names the places and the work you actually do
- Sends the reader back to the page that books the job โ the service page, or Get in touch
The URL is the product. The sentences have to be true. If you use photos, use the real shop.
If you cannot point at the search the page is for, do not write it. That is the difference between a blog for small business SEO and a magazine nobody asked for.
The post is an extra door, not the whole site
A brochure page answers who you are. A post answers the question someone types before they call.
A contractor can have a service page for the work. A post can cover a job type people keep asking about, or whether you actually drive out. A farm stand can put hours on the homepage and give the Saturday question its own page. A salon can answer the booking question people type before they ever tap Call.
The post is not the whole funnel. The homepage and the call button are still the room. The longer version of that path is in We don't build websites. We build traffic funnels.
A new URL does not fix a wrong phone number. Matching facts across the site and Maps is still the floor. See local search basics for Virginia businesses and Do you need a Google Business Profile?
You do not have to write it yourself
Most owners we talk to do not have a writing habit. They have jobs. That is fine.
Every PFQWEB site includes launch and technical SEO. That is not a magazine. That is the floor so Google can read what you already have.
You start with a site that works on a phone and a listing that matches it. Then you add the URLs the homepage cannot carry. If you later want help planning and writing those pages, we can do that as ongoing search work. You do not have to start there.
When you can skip a blog
Skip it if the basics are still broken.
No tap-to-call. Hours that do not match the door. A Google listing that points at Facebook. A homepage that says Welcome and nothing else. Fix those first. A blog on top of a leaky site is more pages that leak.
Skip it if you do not have a second search worth a page. Some shops need one honest site and a complete Maps listing. That is a real finish line.
Skip the magazine version even if you do write. Ten thin posts that name every town within a hundred miles help nobody. A few pages you can stand behind help more. The rest of our notes live on the blog.
Want us to look at what you'd even write about?
Send the URL you have. Even if you are embarrassed by it. We will tell you whether extra pages make sense, or whether the next step is the site, the listing, or leaving it alone.
Talk โ Design & build โ Launch. Most sites land in about one to two weeks once content and feedback are moving. Hiring us for a site? The service page is website design in Richmond, VA.
